The Weirdness
of Language
I created a set of zines that explores unusual aspects of the English language, including extinct words, idioms, and creating new meanings by combining random words. This aims to encourage my audience to question the norm and form their own opinions.
A Diary of Collected Sentences
This zine is a collection of sentences that I received, heard or read over a week. I combined them together to form new narratives and meanings, illustrated through surreal collage. This aims to encourage people to question the norm and form their own opinions of the information we receive on a daily basis.
Some of the sentences are colour-coded as hidden messages within the stories in their original order, demonstrating how mundane statements can transform into deeper meanings when combined with other extracts of text, or vice versa.
The Origin of Idioms
This zine explores well-known idioms and their origin stories. This questions the norm as the expressions may sound weird or random at first but they make sense once the back story is revealed. I illustrated the origins, which often seems unrelated to the phrase.
Word Graveyard: An A-Z Guide
This zine explores the subject of extinct words and their meanings as an alphabetical guide. It demonstrates how what we consider ‘weird’ is all a matter of context as these words were once considered to be normal, based on the time period.
